Nirvana and The Soul

Nirvana

Nirvana is the supreme state of being, free from suffering and individual existence. It is the ultimate goal of all Buddhists, as the attainment of nirvana breaks the otherwise endless rebirth cycle samsara. Buddhists also consider nirvana as freedom from all worldly concerns such as greed, hate, and ignorance. Freedom from these brings about a cessation of all suffering to the individual. After this occurs, it is the duty of the individual to help others achieve nirvana as well. Beyond this, no one can describe in words what nirvana is. It can only be experienced directly.

The Soul

Buddhists believe that human beings are temporary vessels in this world and that, until they attain supreme enlightenment, they do not know their own self or soul. They believe that this world is an illusion and that as a result, one can never truly know one's own, real nature.
